Planet Labs & Carbon Mapper To Develop Specialized Tanager Spacecraft

By Karen Roman

Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL) said it is collaborating with Carbon Mapper to design a specialized version of the Tanager spacecraft to target only shortwave infrared (SWIR) light.

The new vessel will launch in 2028 and capture five times the area coverage of the existing Tanager satellites to expand the limits of methane and gas detection sensitivity, it stated.

“By growing the Tanager constellation, we plan to further demonstrate our ability to build cutting-edge spacecraft quickly and efficiently, which continues to hold enormous value for our global customers and partners,” said Jeff Guido, Planet Labs VP of Space Mission Delivery.
